Kentish Town Man and Van Health and Safety Policy
Kentish Town Man and Van is committed to providing a safe, healthy and secure environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our man and van and removal services. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with loading, unloading, handling goods and operating vehicles in the course of our removal activities.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The aims of this policy are to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and unsafe working practices in all aspects of our operations. We will achieve this by identifying and controlling risks associated with manual handling, driving, access to properties, use of equipment and interaction with customers and the public. We are committed to a process of continual improvement in our health and safety performance.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Kentish Town Man and Van has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. This includes ensuring that adequate resources are provided to manage health and safety effectively, that appropriate risk assessments are carried out and reviewed, and that safe systems of work are in place for all removal and transport activities.
Managers will ensure that staff receive suitable training, information and supervision so they can carry out their work competently and safely. Management will also monitor incidents, near misses and customer feedback in order to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and regular contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must follow instructions, training and safe working procedures provided by Kentish Town Man and Van, and must report hazards, defects, incidents or near misses to management promptly.
Employees are expected to use equipment correctly, cooperate with any risk control measures and refrain from any behaviour that could put themselves, colleagues, customers or members of the public at risk.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Risk assessments are carried out for our core activities, including domestic and commercial moves, loading and unloading vehicles, transporting goods and working at customer premises. These assessments consider hazards such as trips and falls, manual handling injuries, vehicle movements, uneven surfaces, weather conditions and access constraints.
Based on these assessments, Kentish Town Man and Van implements safe working procedures, including planning removals in advance, assessing access on arrival, choosing suitable equipment such as trolleys or straps, and adjusting methods where necessary to maintain safety. These procedures are reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes in our operations.
Manual Handling and Protection of Goods
Manual handling is central to removal work, and we place strong emphasis on safe lifting and carrying techniques. Staff receive instruction in correct posture, team lifting, use of mechanical aids where available and recognition of personal limits. Heavy, bulky or awkward items are assessed individually and moved by more than one person where required.
We aim to protect both people and property by securing loads properly, avoiding overloading equipment, and maintaining clear walkways to reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls. When handling customers belongings, staff are trained to balance care for the goods with their own safety, avoiding unsafe shortcuts or excessive strain.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Kentish Town Man and Van is committed to safe operation of all vehicles used in our man and van and removal services. Vehicles are maintained to a high standard in line with legal requirements and manufacturer guidance. Drivers are expected to carry out basic pre-use checks and to report any defects immediately.
All driving must be carried out in a safe and courteous manner, observing speed limits, parking regulations and site rules at customer locations. Loads are secured properly within vehicles to prevent shifting during transit, and drivers must not operate vehicles while tired, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when otherwise unfit to drive.
Customer and Public Safety
Our work frequently takes place in and around residential and commercial premises, often in busy streets. Kentish Town Man and Van takes reasonable steps to protect customers, neighbours and passers-by from risks associated with our activities. This includes managing parking and access safely, maintaining clear routes where possible, and being alert to the presence of children, pets and vulnerable individuals.
Staff are instructed to be considerate when moving large items through shared spaces, to minimise obstruction and noise, and to communicate clearly with customers about any safety concerns relating to access, heavy items or fragile areas of a property.
Training, Communication and Consultation
Health and safety training is provided as part of induction and is refreshed periodically or when work methods change. Topics include manual handling, vehicle and driving safety, use of equipment, hazard awareness and emergency procedures specific to removal work.
Kentish Town Man and Van encourages open communication about health and safety. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in reviews of working methods. Important safety information is communicated through briefings and updates so that all staff are aware of current procedures.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and damage to property arising from our operations must be reported as soon as practicable. This allows Kentish Town Man and Van to investigate incidents, learn from them and put in place measures to prevent recurrence. Records of incidents are maintained and reviewed regularly.
Emergency procedures are in place for situations such as personal injury, fire, vehicle collision or sudden illness during a job. Staff are briefed on how to respond, including contacting the appropriate emergency services and making the scene as safe as possible for themselves, customers and bystanders.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Kentish Town Man and Van monitors health and safety performance through incident records, feedback from staff and customers, and periodic review of risk assessments and procedures. This policy is reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains suitable for the nature and scale of our man and van and removal activities.
We are committed to continuously improving our approach to health and safety, recognising that maintaining high standards protects our team, our customers and the wider community while supporting a reliable and professional removal service.
